Tata Motors and Shell Join Forces to Set Up EV Charging Stations in India

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd. (TPEM) has teamed up with Shell India Markets Private Limited (SIMPL) to set up EV charging stations across India. The automotive manufacturer inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shell, a British oil and gas company, to provide superior EV charging experiences to its customers. 

Apart from third-party EV charging networks, Tata Motors EV owners currently utilize the brand’s Tata Power electric vehicle chargers. The partnership will leverage Shell’s extensive fuel station network and Tata’s knowledge of more than 1.4 lakh Tata EVs on Indian roads to install chargers at sites where Tata EV customers commonly visit.

The precise number of Tata-Shell EV chargers slated for India has not been disclosed by the auto giant. The new electric vehicle charging stations will be installed at Shell's fuel stations, and they will add to the nation’s growing EV charging network. As of now, Tata Power owns more than 8,000 EV charging infrastructures across the country. As per the Ministry of Power, India currently has 12,146 public electric vehicle charging stations.

The duo is also aiming to introduce a better payment system for this electric vehicle charging network. Additionally, Tata Motors intends to launch loyalty programs for Tata EV owners in India. Shell provides an EV recharge network with fast charging options.

Tata Motors is one of the prominent automakers in India and holds a leading position in the electric passenger vehicle segment with a market share of 71 percent. The company currently retails four electric cars in the country, including the Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Nexon EV, and Punch EV. By the end of 2024, the auto marque is planning to unveil three new electric vehicles in India. The brand has also opened its first EV-exclusive showroom in Gurugram.

The Chief Strategy Officer at Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles, Balaje Rajan, stated, “By combining TPEM's deep understanding of EV usage with Shell's unparalleled customer experience, this strategic alliance will certainly bring a marked change in India’s charging behaviour, in turn driving up the EV adoption in the country." Sanjay Varkey, Director of Shell India Markets Private Limited, said, “Our strategic partnership with Tata Passenger Electric Mobility aims to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the country by leveraging digital integration and customer-centric initiatives."
